The Guardians are back and better than ever!

One of my favorite Marvel films to date releases today on Blu Ray and Digital HD with a ton of bonus content that will have you singing your favorite hits of the 70s and 80s!

In Guardians of the Galaxy 2 we join Star Lord and his band of misfits on a new quest to save the world as well as diving deeper into Peter’s past.

Right from the get-go, the film sets the tone of brazen colors and a fight scene that takes a back seat to the most adorable Baby Groot dance sequence that could have ever existed. Going into the film, I was a bit worried that Marvel would lean too heavily into the marketing potential of Baby Groot but James Gunn had done a service of making him one of the strongest characters without completely abusing the popularity.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is a culmination of everything that makes a film great. A healthy balance of comedy and action with a well written story that may even make you shed a tear or two. We all go to the movies looking to feel something and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 makes that happen on so many levels from joy to sadness.

If you think the fun stopped in the theaters, guess again. The Blu Ray and Digital HD release offers so much more fun than the film itself including the amazing retro-esque Inferno music video which features David Hasselhoff.

Check out a full list of the bonus features below and get your copy today!…or last week if you’re only interested in the Digital version.

Disney fans were excited to learn last year that as of September 2016, all Disney theatrical features would make their way to Netflix as part of a 2012 deal between the two companies. This included all Disney Animation, Star Wars and Marvel films.

Well, that’s about to change…

This week Disney announced in their shareholder call that in 2019, all Disney movies would be removed from Netflix and that they would be launching their own subscription service.

Disney has yet to state what that would include whether it be just Disney theatrical films or if it would include other properties from the family of companies ranging from Star Wars to Marvel or even ABC, Disney Channel and ESPN programming as well as how far back the service would go.

A similar service, called DisneyLife, has already been tested in the UK.

Netflix has noted that they will still be working with Disney to retain shows like Daredevil.

Fans have had mixed reactions stating they didn’t want to have to add another subscription to their current line-up and other fans seems to love the idea of a one-stop streaming shop of all things Disney.

Either way, it was something the company likely had to do as it was competing with their own in-home distribution business.

What are your thoughts?

“We wants the redhead!” is a phrase that not only fans have associated with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean attraction for the past 6 decades but it’s also been a marketing slogan for Disney that graces t-shirts and a variety of other products throughout the parks.

Today Disney has announced that beginning in 2018, as part of a refurbishment to the attraction, the auction scene featuring ride-goers favorite redhead would be altered significantly.

The auctioneers will no longer be telling the pirates to “take a wench for a bride” but will be auctioning goods instead.

This is not the first time that Disney has made changes to the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Prior to1997, a section of the dark ride had the pirates chasing the women around in the city only to find in the last scene, the larger woman was chasing the man.

The update made it so that rather than be sexually suggesting, though as a naive and innocent child I just found the scene to be funny, they added food to the hands of the pirates and brooms to the hands of the women.

Overall, fans seem to be pretty mixed on the news on these new updates as traditionalist feel it painted the pirates in a true light and is a product of the era it serves to represent. Other feel that this is a positive movement in the quest for women’s rights.

How do you feel about it?

Changes are expected to happen in 2018 at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Though Bambi may have not been my favorite animated feature from an entertainment standpoint, it certainly is one of my favorite Disney flicks from a technical standpoint.

This revolutionary animated film is one of Walt Disney’s earliest achievements due to the sheer effort that went into the production of animating Bambi.

Bambi tells the story of an adorable fawn, of the same name, along with a forest of other lovable critters like Flower and Thumper.

When a series of unfortunate events leaves Bambi alone to fend for himself, some new friends step up to fill a void that Bambi was forced to face,

This month we celebrate 75 years of this classic film with an all new Blu Ray and HD Digital release that’s full of great features that make classic animation nerds like me weak in the knees.

As mentioned earlier, Bambi was an animated masterpiece of its time and the features contained on the Blu Ray show exactly what type of work went into making this film a reality…including behind the scenes segments which reveal exactly what kind of research the animators went through to bring these forest animals to life.

Also, fans are treated to some animated shorts when the purchase the 75th anniversary edition of Bambi but unlike newer features, the Blu Ray and HD Digital versions include an original Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short!

This is a must-have for any classic Disney fan’s collection and is available in stores and online.

See below for a full list of all of the features included on the Blu Ray.

All-New Features:

  • THE BAMBI EFFECT – “Bambi” was full of innovations for its time. Let’s take a look at how those past innovations affected future Disney animated titles all the way up to today.
  • STUDIO STORIES: “BAMBI” – Recordings of Walt Disney. Listen in on intimate moments where he discusses the challenges, pitfalls and triumphs during the production of “Bambi.”
  • DELETED SCENE: BAMBI’S ICE AND SNOW – Bambi coaxes Thumper and his brothers and sisters to come play on the ice during the first snow.
  • DELETED SCENE: THE GRASSHOPPER – A grasshopper confronts Bambi and Thumper and finds himself in quite a predicament.
  • BAMBI FAWN FACTS – Think you know everything there is to know about Bambi and his forest companions? Well, it’s time to discover some fun real-life facts about the creatures that live in the forest he calls home.
  • OSWALD THE LUCKY RABBIT: “AFRICA BEFORE DARK” – Oswald Short.
  • CELEBRATING TYRUS WONG (DIGITAL EXCLUSIVE) – A heartfelt look at the man who played a key role in the success of “Bambi.” Much like Mary Blair and Eyvind Earle, Tyrus Wong had a unique signature style all to his own. The soft water-colored backgrounds and beautiful palettes in “Bambi” were inspired by Tyrus’ concept art paintings.

Classic Features:

  • DELETED SCENES – Two Leaves, Bambi Stuck on a Reed, Winter Grass, Twitterpated
  • THE MAKING OF BAMBI: A PRINCE IS BORN
    • STORY: TELLING THE TALE
    • CHARACTERS: DRAWN TO NATURE
    • ACTORS: GIVING VOICE TO ANIMALS
    • ART DESIGN: IMPRESSIONS OF THE FOREST
    • MUSIC: NATURE’S SYMPHONY
    • HISTORY: BACK TO THE BEGINNING
  • TRICK OF THE TRADE (Excerpt)
  • INSIDE THE DISNEY ARCHIVES
  • THE OLD MILL: ANIMATED SHORT

The first full length feature Star Wars film to take place outside of the linear timeline is now available on Blu Ray and Digital!

I’m super excited to be reviewing this film because it was one of my favorite movies of 2016.

For those you haven’t seen it yet, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story takes place in tandem with A New Hope, the original film from 1977.

In Rogue One, we follow a group of rebels who work to acquire the Death Star plans for the Rebellion. Without those plans, Luke Skywalker and crew wouldn’t have had the means to attack the space station and inflict the damage in the infamous trench run scenes.

Rogue One introduces us to a slew of awesome new characters like Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) who fans are sure to fall in love with. other cast members include Donny Yen and Forest Whitaker.

As with all Star Wars and Disney movies, a lot of bonus content is packed in which make purchasing this movie worthwhile over waiting for it to hit one of the streaming services. Though I would have liked to see more commentary features, there is some amazing content packed in to justify the price in my opinion (see below for full list).

I have to admit, when I found out that Disney would be leaving the linear storyline for side stories and character films, I was a bit skeptical. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has proven that you can make a robust film within the Star Wars Universe without having to stick to the main timeline and character lineup.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is available NOW on Blu Ray and Digital.

  • A Rogue Idea – Hear how ILM’s John Knoll came up with the movie’s concept – and why it’s the right film to launch the Star Wars stand-alone films.
  • Jyn: The Rebel – Get to know Rogue One’s defiant, resourceful survivor, and hear what it was like for Felicity Jones to bring her to life onscreen.
  • Cassian: The Spy – Diego Luna shares insights into his complex, driven character, who becomes a hero through selflessness, perseverance and passion.
  • K-2SO: The Droid – Explore the development of this reprogrammed Imperial droid, from initial pitch and character design through Alan Tudyk’s performance.
  • Baze & Chirrut: Guardians of the Whills – Go deeper into the relationship between these two very different characters, with Chinese superstars Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen.
  • Bodhi & Saw: The Pilot & The Revolutionary – Forest Whitaker and Riz Ahmed reflect on Saw Gerrera, the broken Rebel leader, and Bodhi Rook, the Imperial pilot who defects.
  • The Empire – Meet a dangerous new Imperial adversary…and cross paths once more with the most iconic villain of all time.
  • Visions of Hope: The Look of “Rogue One” – The filmmakers describe the challenges and thrills of developing a bold new look for the movie that can fit within the world of the original trilogy.
  • The Princess & The Governor – See what it took to bring the vibrant young princess of “Star Wars: A New Hope” – as well as one of her most memorable foes– – back to the screen.
  • Epilogue: The Story Continues – Filmmakers and cast celebrate Rogue One’s premiere and look forward into the future, to the Star Wars stories yet to be told.
  • Rogue Connections – Uncover Easter eggs and film facts hidden throughout the movie that connect “Rogue One” to the Star Wars universe.

Though Moana may not have been my favorite Disney Animation film of the past few years (don’t get me wrong, I still loved it), the recent digital and Blu Ray release definitely has some of the most robust bonus features available for a Disney film.

Whether you’re looking for behind the scenes footage of the filmmaking process, new short content or commentary, there is something for everyone in the Moana bonus features.

As someone who loves to see how much work really goes into these films, I appreciated the features which focus on things like how the character’s hair is animated or how they brought the ocean to life and made it its own character.

Disney has always been an industry leader in animation techniques and are not just an entertainment company but a technology company as well. This goes back to Walt’s creation of the Multiplane Camera which added layers of art to the original Snow White animated feature.

The features on Moana show just how sophisticated the animation process has become and how proprietary software has allowed for breakthroughs in visuals.

Some of the other features include a new short film featuring Maui and Moana entitled Gone Fishing and the short that debuted before the film, Inner Workings.

Whether you’re a fan of feature or a fan of animation and filmmaking in general, Moana is a must-have for your collection.

Moana is available in both digital and Blu Ray now!

Check out our full list of features on the Moana Blu Ray below!

  • Theatrical Short Film: “Inner Workings” – With introduction by the filmmakers, is the story of the internal struggle between a man’s pragmatic, logical side and his free-spirited, adventurous half. Created by a small team at Walt Disney Animation Studios in a unique, fast-paced style that blends CG and traditional hand-drawn animation, the short explores the importance of finding balance in daily life.
  • Maui Mini-Movie: “Gone Fishing” – When Maui decides it’s time to take charge of the ocean and catch his next meal, Moana must show him the error of his ways … with a little help from her friends!
  • Voice of the Islands – An in-depth look at how Pacific Island people and cultures inspired the filmmakers to create the story of “Moana.”
  • Things You Didn’t Know About …
    • Meet the stars of “Moana” in this dynamic Q&A featuring Dwayne Johnson, newcomer Auli‘i Cravalho, and famed animation directors Ron and John.
    • Meet the musical team behind “Moana” in this fascinating Q&A featuring Opetaia Foa‘i, Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
  • Island Fashion – Find out how costume designer Neysa Bové took on the unique challenge of creating costumes using materials and techniques native to the islands of Oceania.
  • They Know the Way: Making the Music of “Moana” – Musicians Opetaia Foa‘I, Marc Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda take us on a personal journey through their involvement in the movie and how it changed their lives.
  • Fishing for Easter Eggs – Dive deep into the ocean and fish for the Easter Eggs hidden by the animators at Walt Disney Animation Studios.
  • The Elements of … – This series of four mini-docs explores the technical achievements behind some of the ground-breaking effects used in the film.
    • Mini Maui – Meet “Mini Maui,” Maui’s tattoo sidekick. Animated by legendary hand-drawn animator Eric Goldberg, we explore how the 2D world collides with CG animation to bring the demigod’s tattoos to life.
    • Water – In the movie, the ocean is a character. This piece explores how the water is given a personality, along with the technical feats of creating a believable ocean landscape farther than the eye can see.
    • Lava – Te Kā is a creature made of lava, smoke and fire. This piece dives into the challenges of making an animated creature of massive scale brought to fiery life by character, technical and effects animators.
    • Hair – One of the greatest technical achievements of the film was the animation of the beautiful, curly hair on Moana and Maui. Take a look at the hair-raising detail that goes into animating each strand, adding performance to the movie that has never been seen before.
  • Deleted Song: “Warrior Face” – With introduction by songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda.
  • Deleted Scenes – Ron and John introduce the following deleted scenes:  Race the Wind/Ties that Bind; Discussing Moana’s Future; Under the Sea; Grandmother’s Warning/Legend of Maui; Education of Moana; Father, Daughter, Boat; andCanoe Race.
