Is The Disney Movie Club Worth The Investment?

By · · in Deals, Movies, News

Disney Movie Club

If you subscribe to Disney’s newsletters, you may have seen links to join the Disney Movie Club with an offer to receive 4 DVDs or Blu Rays for $1. The question is, what’s the catch?

The Disney Movie Club works similarly to mail order music and movie services like Columbia House which peaked in popularity in the 90s.

Basically the way it works is that you can order 4 Disney movies up front for $1 with free shipping and in 2-4 weeks you will receive your movies on either DVD or Blu Ray (depending on what you chose when you signed up).

After that, you will have 2 years to fulfill a commitment which requires you to buy 5 more movies at the regular club price of $19.95 per DVD or $29.95 per Blu Ray.

The Numbers

With all of the sales retailers like Amazon and Target have on movies, it’s easy to think that $29.95 is a steep price to pay for a Blu Ray. But let’s break it down and see how the numbers actually play out.

Quantity Price Each
Free 4 $0.00
Paid 5 $29.95
Total 9 $149.75

Above we look at the numbers using the Blu Ray pricing as an example. With the exclusion of taxes and shipping you will be spending $149.75 for a total of 9 Blu Ray movies. This breaks down to about $16.64 per Blu Ray which is actually a pretty good deal since Disney movies rarely sell for under $20 retail.

On top of that, once you fulfill your commitment, you can either cancel your membership or become a VIP member and get the chance to order movies at a discounted rate and even get dibs on some exclusive products offered only to Disney Movie Club members.

What Movies Are Available?

The Disney Movie Club actually has a very strong selection of Disney and Pixar movies on DVD and Blu Ray. If you are the type to purchase the newest Disney release as it comes out, the club may be very beneficial to you.

The image below is the first step of the registration process and it gives you a sample size of what films are available through the membership.

Disney Movie Club

What To Look Out For

Now that you’ve eased your mind with the pricing of the movies and benefits of becoming a member, here is what you’ll have to look out for.

Every month, the club will send you an email with the pick of the month. Basically the way this works is that they choose a movie and give you the option to decline it or accept it. If you don’t do anything, they will automatically send it to you and you will be billed for it.

If you are billed for a movie using this method, it will go towards your commitment. Just be sure to stay on top of it or you may receive a movie you don’t want.

End Game

As mentioned earlier, once you have fulfilled your commitment, you can cancel your membership at any time or continue as a VIP member. Being a VIP member is free and will allow you to receive special deals and discounts on future purchases as well as weekly deals where a certain movie will be on sale.

One of the perks of the VIP membership is that you can also get your hands on Disney pins (currently 11 available) which are exclusive to members. If you are a pin trader or collector, this is a wonderful perk that makes the DMC even more desirable.

Overview

In short, the Disney Movie Club is a wonderful investment for those that buy Disney movies on DVD and Blu Ray. If you see yourself purchasing 9 or more Disney movies in the next 2 years, you may actually save a good amount of money in the long run.

Perhaps the format of the Disney Movie Club may create a hesitance since it seems like a great deal up front with a commitment after the reward (like getting a lollipop before seeing the doctor). But once you break down the numbers, it really makes sense for someone who is either looking to build a collection or add to their existing one.

With some wonderful movies hitting theaters soon, the future is pretty bright for Disney home movie releases. With the added bonus of the VIP membership once you’ve fulfilled your obligation, Disney fans should be able to get a lot more out of this club than a discount on movie purchases.

What is your experience with the Disney Movie Club?

My experience with Disney Movie Club and the Disney Rewards is a lot of difficulty navigating their online systems. I am a computer literate person but most of the time when I try to log on to either site I have a lot of difficulties and usually end up needing to ask for a new password, despite having a record of the password I set up the account with. Getting into both websites has discouraged me from wanting to refer the disney movie club to friends. I have told them about other sites that are much easier to navigate.

I’ve been a member for almost 7 months and have already fulfilled my 4 movie commitment. I have only had one issue with them, I was diligent in declining my feature title every month, but for some reason the website was telling me I had no feature title when I really did, so I got stuck with a box set of The Santa Clause :/ it was xmas time so it was ok, but I did call and complain and they fixed the problem and offered me a chance to return it, but I kept it. I feel like it worked out well for me, in the end I ended up getting 15 blu rays for $155, which is a steal. I always made sure to add extra movies when there was a 40-50% off sale.

I am a college student who does not have a lot of extra money to spend. I signed up for the 4 DVDs at a $1 each not realizing it required a membership in which you have to buy several overpriced DVDs I could have bought cheaper at Walmart. I decided I wanted to cancel my membership. I could not figure that out so I had to have someone do it for me because it was so difficult. Then they told me the return shipment of movies (you have to return all purchases to forfeit your membership) was too long after the purchase date and I could not have my refund check. It would just become credit on my Disney Movie Club Account. I do not think it is fair to trick people into becoming a member, paying an ton of money, and then refusing a refund.

Rebecca, DMC is actually very upfront about what you need to do once you become a member.

If you add the price of the free DVDs and the 4 that you need to buy at full price and average it out, they are much cheaper than Wal Mart or any retailer.

You have to understand there is a reason they would give you 4 or 5 movies for $1.

  5. Alaina · November 18, 2015 at 11:41 am

They didn’t trick you, you just didn’t read well enough.

  6. Greyer · April 5, 2016 at 9:33 am

no they really do though. I just looked through their signup. they set it up so you don’t figure it out unless you researched it first.

  7. Mary · May 22, 2016 at 12:17 pm

What did you do? I made the mistake and they tell me now if I don’t pay my movies for my membership then they will charge me 80 dollars plus the 5 movies that I didn’t get that’s about 180 dollars.

  8. holloway · May 29, 2015 at 4:23 pm

I have been a member for 4 months now, I personally have purchased 32 titles thus far and all of them came within 3 weeks through Canada Post, I have always declined my feature titles online and haven’t had any issue with them sending unwanted movies like many describe, many movies are over 30 dollars each in stores and this works out to be a great deal for someone looking for a collection for themselves or their children. I am now a VIP member which makes the buying experience even cheaper.. I fully recommend this site for people and most of the complaints on sites are simply people to lazy to read and/or respond to the featured titles which is clearly outlined in the agreement

I had ordered the Dalmatians movie, paid 1st over the phone through Visa debit which I was told went through, then received a notice to pay in the mail a week later so then I paid by cheque on April 9th and was cashed on April 27th and as well I pre ordered the Tinker bell & the never beast, paid by cheque on April 10th & they cashed on May 5th!

I called to complain as I never even received my Tinkerbell Movie which is now on Netflix! I was told I had to get my bank to fax the proof even though I have photos of the cashed cheques from my bank, what BS! I absolutely hate this useless overpriced headache of a company! I have never been so disgusted with a companies operations as I have with this dis organized, impossible to deal with company.

If you want movies I suggest going to walmart, they are cheaper & you will actually get what you pay for. I DO NOT recommend ANYONE to join the Movie club as you WILL be in for a HUGE disappointment! They are Not a good company to deal with.

I know this was written a while back but I absolutely love DMC! I haven’t had any problems and their website is phenomenal. If I’m ever confused about my agreement or just have a question about a movie I can use the chat and they help right away. I’m a college student so I know about living on a budget and this has helped me save money whenever I want to buy a movie that is coming out (just got the new Cinderella and I LOVE it!). I would and have recommended to a lot of people who I know are big Disney fans. Hope everyone else loves it as much as I do!

For me the Disney club is worth the investment if your purchasing blu-rays and into the HD ultraviolet. I’ve made a commitment twice in my life. The first time I was just a Dvd collector and didn’t care very much about blu-ray and ultraviolet. It really hurt my pocket and I forgot to deny those monthly things they send you. I didn’t like any of them and they worked against my commitment… It was a bad break. I ended my relationship with them for a couple years. However, ever since upgrading to Blu-ray and HD purchaser, Disney movie club actually protects your investments. If a disc breaks you can file a replacement and they keep track of your ultraviolets themselves.

The disney points… not sure how I feel about that. Its cool I guess but your getting a good free Blu-ray for purchasing lots and lots of Blu-rays. Disney points aren’t that cool. So you get one Blu-ray or DVD after you purchase 10-15 DVDs or Blu-rays…

The club is worth it because your purchasers have the best protection. I went for blu-ray and ultraviolet when before I was sternly a DVD purchaser. However, while part of the movie club, the movie rewards program lets you register your discs and ultraviolets directly with them. If one breaks you pay a small fee and get a new disc. Better than buying a whole new purchase. The problem with buyings disney DVDs or Blurays elsewhere is that they have already been opened and there rewards and registration have already been taken and then re-wrapped with a shrink wrapper they bought at a closing movie rental store.

Also, you get decent deals because they offer big discounts every now and then which brings down many of the over priced discs. After the commitment your really not paying that price. In fact even during your commitment it could be frustrating to be taking advantage of the good deals and realizing none of them count towards your commitment. BUY ALL SEVEN NOT JUST THE 5 $1.00 ones. Your crazy if you don’t. Those last two are cheap and they help with one against your commitment.

I canceled my membership after fulfilling my obligation and received a cancelation letter, shortly afterwords my wife recieved a “gift” of two dvds no one requested? and then i was billed for it afterwords of course. The problem I am having is I never requested any gift to my wife the whole transaction happened without any contact by us to DMC and there was no explanation of why there was supposedly a gift from me to my wife I did not request.

  13. kinwin · January 19, 2016 at 10:14 pm

What happens if you just keep declining the DVD’s every month, until 2 years have passed?

  14. Daniel Nasserian · January 19, 2016 at 11:44 pm

Great question. I can’t say for certain with regards to Disney Movie Club but I know comparable clubs will hold you to the commitment. If you don’t fulfill your commitment, which is a contract between you and the club, then they will likely charge you the amount you should have redeemed in the form of a bill.

If you don’t pay the bill, chances are that they will send a collection agency which may damage your credit.

  15. cassia · February 20, 2016 at 11:51 am

so with all the movies you buy … you can keep them right? and after you have done the 5 commitment thing and cancel, do you still keep it ?

  16. Daniel Nasserian · February 21, 2016 at 12:12 am

You keep the 4 movies you get free as well as the 4 you need to buy as part of the commitment.

  17. Telija · January 21, 2016 at 2:23 pm

You will have to pay the retail value of the original movies you selected for your introductory offer.

  19. Trevor · April 8, 2016 at 8:48 pm

I’ve been a member of the Disney Movie Club since 2011, and have purchased over 40 movies from them. Overall, I’m satisfied with the service, and as a VIP member, the extra savings really so come into play when are ordering more than 1 movie. Where it starts to come off the rails is the monthly ‘deal’ (which I’ve declined and still shows up, prompting phone/shipping nightmares) and new releases (a real sore spot I’ll elaborate on).
So, a while back I ordered the Pixar film “Inside Out” from the club. I made it a package deal with another film I wanted (and to get the VIP savings). Sure, what I paid for “Inside Out” was a little more than what I would have paid at Walmart or Target, but I got the other movie I wanted for a huge discount, and a free lithograph. But, instead of getting IO when it was released to the public (on a Tuesday), I got it roughly 3 WEEKS later. I checked the order tracking, and they didn’t even ship IO for 14 DAYS after it was released for sale. The other film I ordered (and the lithograph) showed up in a separate package shortly after I made the order. I called the company to ask why it took so long, but they couldn’t come up with any real answer. Flash forward to the release of “The Good Dinosaur” (I didn’t like it, but my daughter loves dinosaurs). SAME THING HAPPENED. Almost 3 weeks until it showed up in my mailbox.
Shouldn’t a company that is firmly associated with the parent organization be able to ship their films in a timely manner? Hell, they should be getting them early and shipping early as a benefit of being a club member.
The final straw to my saga is “Star Wars: Force Awakens”. I’ve ordered it (and a few other movies) and if it takes more than 1 week to arrive, I’ll be terminating my membership. I’ve done the math, and I’m just about breaking even on the price point (Club vs. Local Store) that I’m no longer really saving much per item, and I’ve purchased all the other Disney films I’m interested from their library.

  20. Rebecca · April 26, 2016 at 6:58 am

I preordered The Good Dinosaur through the club as well, but I actually received it the day BEFORE the official release date. Go figure.

  21. Michelle E · April 10, 2016 at 8:12 pm

SO worth the investment! I signed up for DMC with the 5 for $1 deal. I got my 5 free movies. I started sharing my link and I’ve currently gotten 12 more movies on the way just from people signing up using my code. I haven’t even started buying my movies yet. I’m def. staying with the DMC since i’ve definitely gotten my moneys worth.

  22. mashworldhistory · September 28, 2016 at 10:22 pm

Where have you been sharing your link? I just signed up and am interested in getting this going, but don’t have any friends that would be interested:(

  23. Rachel S · April 12, 2016 at 8:23 am

Do the bonus titles offered during enrollment count towards the minimum required to fulfill membership minimums? Like get the 4 for $1 shipping, and order the two bonus discounted titles? TIA

  24. Daniel Nasserian · April 12, 2016 at 9:19 am

Only 1 of the extra titles will count towards your requirement.

  25. The Real Maple Syrup · April 20, 2016 at 5:47 pm

We first learned about the DMC through a pamphlet in a newly bought Disney BluRay (The Good Dinosaur, I believe). It advertised the standard 4 for $1, with a five move commitment. I did some quick research, however, and found an even better promo code; 5 BluRays for $1, plus a free Mickey Mouse blanket, and only a 3 movie commitment over two years. I also took advantage of the free pin with a full price purchase. We completed out commitment writhing two months. We also collected enough Disney rewards points to get a couple of free BluRays from their rewards site!

Only complaint is the relatively long shipping time, 7-10 days. You’d think they would speed things up a bit when you actually pay for shipping.

  26. Benny Lara · May 18, 2016 at 10:07 am

I joined the DMC but before I did, I called and asked if I would get digital copies with the DVDs. The agents could not answer my question… They did say that I would get the Disney Movie Rewards and since I previously used the rewards code to get a digital copy I thought it would work. I ordered the DVDs because the future orders would be cheaper than the BRDs. After I joined I got the DVDs but the reward code did not give me the digital copy. Once I was able to look at the catalog I realize that most BRDs come with digital HD copy. Has anyone joined with BRD format right off the bat; if so, did they come with a digital copy? I think I messed up by not ordering BRD with the initial introductory order…

  27. Daniel Nasserian · May 18, 2016 at 10:39 am

Hi Benny, both DVDs and Blu Ray typically have digital copies. Whenever I make a purchase, I check the top of the box art to see if it says digital copy or not.

  28. Benny Lara · May 18, 2016 at 11:57 am

Right; now that I’m already a member I can make sure future orders have digital copies, although I would have to disagree that DVDs “typically” have digital copies (if you go to the site and filter for “DVD,” of the first 40 results only 2 include a digital copy; on the contrary, if you filter for BRD all but 10 of the first 40 have digital copies).
But my question is more of a “if I had done something differently when I started would I get a different result” scenario. So, if, when I was placing my first introductory order (the one where you get 4 DVDs or BRD for $1 – plus 2 bonus if you choose), I had selected BRD as my preferred format would I have received a digital copy or would those “introductory” BRDs have come without digital copies as the DVDs did? Thanks, for taking the time to reply.

  29. Benny Lara · May 18, 2016 at 12:04 pm

Just to be clear: this is in reference to DVDs within the context of the Disney Movie Club, not DVDs in general…

  30. Paola · June 24, 2016 at 6:05 am

It is worry it, you can get 5 movies for just $1 (http://fbuy.me/d0z56) plus add a movie for $11.95 that will count towards your commitment titles (which are 3 movies) and you can add another one for 9.95. Thats right, 7 movies for $21.90. You only need to buy 2 more movies at regular price, you have 2 years to do it, and you can cancel anytime 😉👌🏼

  31. John McGrath · July 12, 2016 at 9:51 am

So I have seen everyone’s concerns listed in the previous posts. Some don’t like the automatic response of charging for a movie u might have forgot or missed the chance to respond to and I agree. Some think after all the charges and all the movies are sent they could have done better in the end. There is a possible argument to this especially when places like Movie Stop are going out of business selling at 40% to 85% off of the lowest listed price. MY PERSONAL GRIPE IS THEY DON’T LIST THE REMAINING OBLIGATION u HAVE ON YOUR BILLING STATEMENT. I already called to complain over the phone before writing this and I am referring to the statement that I am holding, right now in my hands. The person I called who sounded Indian BTW, said he will pass this complaint along to someone who could make the change. On another note, keep in mind the person that this is best suited for is for someone who wants to purchase a larger quantity of movies up front. In other words the person who is willing to knock out all, or nearly all, of their obligation with in a few months or less. Then cancel the membership so u don’t have to say “NO THANKS” every month.

  32. Dave · August 16, 2016 at 5:04 pm

In my opinion the Disney Movie Club is a bad way to collect movies on Blu Ray and DVD. First, you’re limited to Disney movies. Second, when you create your account you have to decide on DVD or Blu Ray. Third, my experience with their customer service was beyond horrible. I wanted to know if my first “bonus” selection would count toward fulfilling my obligation. The “cast member” told me she couldn’t tell me that until I became a member. She put me on hold for five minutes then came back and told me it would count. She asked if she could sign me up and take my credit card information. I told her I would think it over and, if I decided to join, I would sign up online. She told me she didn’t think I would be able to sign up online, sarcastically wished me a “magical day” and hung up.

Do you want to build a great movie collection, including Disney films? Become an Amazon Prime member. You’ll pay far less per DVD or Blu Ray, especially for the older movies, than you would at Disney and you’ll get free shipping on everything you buy. An Amazon Prime membership costs $100 per year but if you buy as much as I do at Amazon, blu ray and DVD players, household supplies, movies and more, the free shipping will pay off in no time

I grew up with Disney and love everything Disney as much as anyone else. But the Disney Movie Club, to my way of thinking, is just not worth the hassle.

  33. Ashley Schulz · September 27, 2016 at 4:22 pm

So I’m considering joining DMC and I’ve been doing a lot of research on it trying to make my decision. One question I can’t seem to find an answer for is regarding the 4 movies for $1. I’ve got at least 4 of those things in movies I’ve purchased with codes to redeem the deal. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if these deals are only good for if you’re joining the membership or if I could redeem these codes even after becoming a member? (I’m assuming it’s only good for joining members, but I’d still like to find a solid answer) Thanks for any help!

  34. Dave · September 27, 2016 at 4:40 pm

Have you considered VUDU? You can sign up for a VUDU account free of charge and link it to Disney Movies Anywhere and Ultraviolet. When you buy Blu Rays with a free Digital Copy of the movie, you can redeem the code and watch your movies on VUDU. I keep my discs in several large drawers and watch all my movies on VUDU. With VUDU you can watch your movies on most Smart TVs, Roku, iPad or other tablet, your laptop, anywhere you can get a wifi signal. And if you’ve traveling where there is no wifi you can download your VUDU movies and take them with you. Check it out I think you’ll like it.

  35. Yaskara Armas · October 24, 2016 at 11:10 am

So what your are showing up top about paying 149.75 for 9 movies is not true NOT TRUE (I checked the commitment and clearly states that you have to pay shipping… is NOT free shipping) because for each order, the firs title you have to pay extra 3.95 for shiping and handlig and 2.95 for the next ones so the real numbers are
    4 movies free 0$
5 paid movies that you have to pay as follow… (taking in consideration that you wont buy more than one at a time probably)
For each you’ll pay 29.95+3.95=33.9 times 5 movies = 169.5$ for 9 movies so each movie is 18.83 It is not a bad deal… but take into consideration that older movies are cheaper on Amazon or walmart (for example Big Hero in amazon is 19.96) so at the end of the day I think you get even is no suchhhhhhhh a great deal after all if is too much hassle
So read the commitment first and know your number well before singing.

  36. Dave · October 24, 2016 at 12:53 pm

Another point to consider. I may be wrong, but I believe when you sign up for the club you are buying only the DVDs or Blu Ray discs, no digital copy beyond the “DisneyFile Digital Copy in a choice of iTunes or Windows Media formats. What about a digital copy you can redeem with Ultraviolet and watch on VUDU or other streaming service? I have transferred the vast majority of my movies to my VUDU account so I can watch them on my TV or iPad or anywhere I happen to be with a WiFi signal so the Disney Movie Club is not for me. When I want a Disney movie, I buy it at DisneyMoviesAnywhere.com and it’s instantly available on my VUDU account forever in HD not SD. I love Disney Movies and have a lot of them in my collection but, to me, the Disney Movie Club is not the place to buy them.

  37. Anderson Vieira · December 2, 2016 at 11:27 am

The only bad thing about it is that the movie the offer you doesn’t come with free shipping unless you get another one they select for you. That’s unfair. I think we should get free shipping with add any extra movie to the offer. A lot of times I declined the offer because of shipping. See, I have a Best Buy close to my place. So, why would I pay full price and shipping when I can pay less and get the movie at the same day? Most of the times they movie the attach to the offer are movies I already have, so makes no sense for me to get them. I simply decline it and get it somewhere else. Also, when you buy a new release in the Disney Store pre-order, you pay the same price, but you get some interesting freebies.

  38. Dawn Patton · December 6, 2016 at 9:45 pm

Disney movie club is a great thing for Disney fans but like any club membership you have to read the fine print and respond to the email or mailer each month. I have been a member for years now and have never regretted it. Yes I had to buy 5 movies at regular club price (bluray average price 29.99) but common 5 movies over 2 years is totally doable! I have saved so much thru the DMC my seasons of once apon a time were only 8.99! As someone who is current making the switch to bluray I cannot say how much I have saved by not buying in stores. Don’t hesitate this is not a scam or rip off for a Disney fan this is the best way to complete or add to your collection

  39. Doug W. · December 8, 2016 at 10:08 am

If you read the materials carefully you get what you are promised. After completing my commitment and reaching VIP status I tried to call to simply stop the ridiculous “selection of the month” where they ship and bill what they want to send if you don’t respond. Toll free numbers only had menu selections and I couldn’t break the code on how to talk to a live person. I sent emails asking them to call but they didn’t.

My experience was that they do provide mail, internet, and phone options for declining the selection of the month. I have two occasions where selection of the month didn’t come in the mail so I just logged in every 3 weeks just to stay on top of “decline selection.” You will perpetually have to stay on top of this.

Long story short, they won’t stop the “selection of the month” after you fulfill purchase commitment. In my case they abruptly cancelled my VIP Membership just because I asked for the “selection of the month” to stop so I have lost discounted ordering privileges.

I think a lot of sales are generated by shipping out product not ordered which is why; a) the selection of the month is shifted where they aren’t on a regular monthly date and b) you can’t stop the selection of the month and the friendly DMC goes very unfriendly if you approach this topic.
